The Green Schools Catalyst Quarterly fall issue is out, and this season’s journal is packed with absorbing articles from educational leaders around the country. Titled "The Role of Schools in Community Health and Resilience," the issue presents topics ranging from trauma-informed education to climate resiliency to mindfulness.
Check out a few of our favorites:
- Antwi Akom and his colleagues at Streetwyze discuss the mobile mapping platform they’ve created and how it can be used to address the environmental determinants of health and education—the impacts that neighborhood and "place" can have on students and their families.
- A team of researchers and educators from Wisconsin tell us about the Badger Rock Center in a disadvantaged neighborhood in Madison and its school’s mission to build community resilience through urban agriculture, civic engagement and a whole-system approach.
- Fowell Dunbar, an educator from New Orleans, explores the city’s efforts to overcome segregation in its schools through two approaches embodied by two different schools. In Plessy’s Second Act: Resilience Leads to Integration in Two Post-Katrina New Orleans Public Schools, Dunbar tells the story of the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts and of the Homer A. Plessy Community School, both pushing to serve students that represent the full demographic diversity of the city.
