Brittany is joining us for the summer as our marketing & communications summer associate. She is supporting the Center for Green Schools in media outreach, writing and editing, press coverage, blog posts and social media. She is a rising senior at Howard University, studying public relations.
Position: Marketing & Communications Summer Associate
Current location: Washington DC
Hometown: Washington DC
College Name: Howard University
Degree:currently in my senior year, pursuing a bachelor of arts in communications and a minor in sports management
Areas of expertise:Communications, image management
Previous experience:I have served in a PR capacity with three campus organizations and served as the community service chair for PRSSA, interned at Department of Commerce and the Department of the Interior, and I currently still serve as Director of PR for HBCU Buzz Inc.
Proudest professional accomplishment:In eight months working as the only person in the department of PR for HBCU Buzz, the company grew to nearly 70,000 followers and sealed the most partnerships within those months than prior to coming aboard the team. This is both exceptionally humbling and motivating.
Little known fact: I love speaking in public forums, ex: speaking to the undergraduate population of my university about recycling. BUT I can be very shy. (If that was too boring, I am allergic to fruits and veggies but eat them anyway!)
In your own words, why should schools and campuses “go green?” Members of the human race generally perform based on logic. When there is an option to live environmentally conscious and to help save the planet I inhabit vs. adding to global warming and helping to prepare an earlier than necessary grave for mankind, how could anybody not want to go green? It just makes sense.
What advice would you give to others looking to enter the industry? Although I feel I am just entering the industry myself, I would bring awareness to my driving force, my ambition. “No” does not exist and if there is not a path, I will create one. In short, be hungry and ambitious.
Hobbies: Writing (no surprise there), poetry, boating, singing, modeling, photography, real estate
Favorite book: Invisible Man
Favorite movie: A Little Princess AND It’s Complicated
Favorite food: Caesar Salad, special recipe AND Just about any form of potato AND macaroni & cheese
What was the last song you listened to on your IPod?
I cannot remember, I told myself my iPod was a distraction and sold it to a ten year old for 20 bucks(I definitely made her day!). If I had to guess, I would say something from a Beyonce album.
Who is the person(s) you most admire? Aside from my mother, Michelle Obama.
If you had to choose a different profession, what would it be and why? I would opt to be an interior designer. I sometimes regret not going to an art-related institution, I have always loved fashion and emerging trends and architecture. Being an interior designer merges my creative passions.
Favorite pastime? Boating
Guilty pleasure? Watching cartoons
