Fund a Green Schools Fellowship.

The most effective way to positively transform the environment in which our children learn is to ensure that a school district has the tools and resources to not only implement improvements to facilities and operations but to sustain these improvements over the years.

This sustained transformation can happen with a dedicated, internal champion who changes the culture of the school district from the inside. Recognizing the success of dedicated individuals pushing for change within school districts around the country, the Center for Green Schools Fellows program works to expand this type of transformative action.

Each Fellow implements changes that affect tens of thousands of students and thousands of teachers and staff, not to mention the surrounding community. The Center for Green Schools Fellowship program is a high-impact initiative intended to produce results that can be sustained years past the tenure of the Fellow. The program hires and trains individuals to be embedded as Sustainability Officers within school districts. These individuals are hired through a rigorous application and interview process and receive extensive and ongoing training from the Center and our green schools partners. For three years, the Fellow works with the school district to initiate and accelerate various green schools initiatives that may not otherwise have been able to move forward—initiatives such as green cleaning, comprehensive indoor air quality programs, energy usage monitoring, environmental curriculum integration, and so on. Your support can help bring one of these individuals to a school district seeking assistance.

General Funding Commitments for the 2013 Class of Fellows will close January 15, 2013.

Frequently Asked

My organization is interested in funding a Fellow. How do we find out more?

Please write our Center for Green Schools Fellowship Manager, Anisa Baldwin Metzger, at anisa@usgbc.org if you are interested in funding a position. We will be happy to talk over the program and forward any necessary information to you.

If we fund a position, what specifically are we funding?

Your funds will directed to the hiring and recruitment of the Fellows as well as salary, benefits, travel, and training for the Fellow. For three years, through your support, the Center for Green Schools at USGBC will provide an extensive training program for Fellows, including:

  • Twice-annual in-person trainings in Washington, DC
  • Bi-weekly conference calls with Center for Green Schools staff and other Fellows
  • Individual check-in calls with Center for Green Schools staff
  • Attendance at the Greenbuild Conference and Expo
  • Attendance at local green building continuing education seminars and conferences
  • Twice annual visits from Center for Green Schools staff to school district offices

Your support will also allow the Center for Green Schools to provide salary and full benefits for two years. In an attempt to transition the Fellow’s position into a full-time Sustainability Officer with the school district, employment will transfer to the school district in the third year, and the Center for Green Schools will provide the district funds to cover half of the Fellow’s salary. The training and travel program will remain fully implemented during the third year.

USGBC is a 501(c)3 non-profit. Several benefits are offered as a funding partner for the Green Schools Fellows program. Additional information is available upon request.
